Celebrating differences!

I'm different! From my siblings, my friends and even my husband! There! I've admitted to it! We like different films, different books, different activities. What we have in common is we all love a good argument! It's invigorating and it get's us thinking. Like when we argue about a book (I love it, brothers hate it), we argue it out! We try and figure out the whys and the wherefores, read it again and have another discussion. In fact, my brother and I work together. I am business development and he is creative. We are completely different from each other and yet jump into each others territories. He presumes to teach me how to handle clients, and I trash his scripts. We argue - then get back to work. I sulk and decide to teach him a lesson. I'll talk to the client like he wants me to, the client will get pissed off and he'll see I'm right. Unfortunately for my ego, he's often right. Similarly, he goes off rewrite the script. And (patting myself on the back here), I'm right! But that's my brothers. Let's move on to my husband. Thr relationship where we look for similarities - the so called ditto moments!

I love romantic comedies, he loves horror! I can talk you into your grave, he is the silent strong type! I love big noisy parties, he loves quiet evenings at home! I love a trek, he likes to sit and read, he composes music and i wouldn't know a note if you held a gun to my head...and the list goes on! We are chalk and cheese! Or is it just a case of potatoes potatoes (you know how it's pronounced)! And yet, we are perfectly compatible. There are hardly any ditto moments, yet we agree on most things and stimulate each others minds and creativity! We celebrate our differences.

The point is that liking the same books, movies or activities does not a great relationship make! Ditto moments happen when the similarities are of ethics, beliefs and backgrounds! That is where we need to be the same. Everything else can be taken care of, but if he wants kids and you don't, if you believe in hanging with family and he wants to spend time with friends, if you believe in paying that rs 50 bribe and moving on, while he is an Honest Joe is when problems arise! And that is what I looked for. We share values! We are the same where it counts and that is the way we feel and the things we believe in. And that is what makes for a great relationship.

So while people look for someone who reads the same books, this evening I am going to celebrate the fact that we are different in the unimportant things. He can watch horror and sip tea, while i drink my coffee and read Wodehouse! And then we will thank God that we are the same where it actually counts - and that is our basic make up!

  1. Opposites attract, like they say. Yes it really does not matter if you two are poles apart as I believe a calm one compliments the wild one.All of us keep hunting for that perfect same match but I feel if you love the person you will love the differences and make it work ! ! And agree to disagree.
